I’ve been working with a client recently on a SEO project for their website. Before this client became a client they were somewhat naive about SEO. What they new about the subject was virtually nothing.

As we progressed along in the quoting phase of the project the customer began to talk to friends and aquantances about SEO. They were trying to find justification for my service by talking with their friends.  The following is an excerpt from an email that I received with some of the information they discovered from friends.

As far as I understand about SEO, it is not as valuable as it was 7 or 8 years ago.  At first SEO was very valuable and the thing to do but over the years, the actions that were taken to create SEO pages would become black hat overnight resulting in a site being de-listed in search engine results.

As far as I know, a person doing SEO actions on a site in this day and age has to be incredibly well versed on every update as soon as changes are made in search engine algorythms in order to keep clients on top.  Even at that, one day an action is white hat and the next it is black hat and kapow goes the ranking.

Needless to say I spent quite a bit of time re-educating the client about his misguided understanding of SEO. Today this client is on his way of climbing the SERP rankings and feeling a bit sheepish about his original thoughts on SEO.
